Spinners asserted their supremacy in the first two matches of the 1st Apin Memorial Twenty20 Cricket Tournament, which commenced at SCB Medical College ground in Cuttack today.
Leg spinner Partha Acharya and left-arm twiker Goutam Sahoo shared nine wickets between them to guide host Biswabharati Cricket Club to a thumping seven-wicket win over Muketeswar Cricket Club (Bhubaneswar).
Earlier, a four-wicket haul by leg-spinner Amrit Priyadarshi helped Sports and Cultural Association of Ashok Nagar (SCAAN) script a four-wicket win over their Bhubaneswar city opponents Pragati Sporting in the opening match.
With these wins, SCAAN and Biswabharati advanced to the quarterfinals. In the first two quarterfinals tomorrow, Rameswar Sporting and Union Sporting will lock horns with Solar Club and Saheed Sporting respectively.
The tournament was earlier inaugurated by Orissa Private Engineering College Association secretary Binod Dash and former Orissa Ranji team coach Lalitendu Bidyadhar Mohapatra.
Host Biswabharati Cricket Club president Biswajit Mohanty, secretary Soumitra Choudhury, founder member Pradipta Kishore Khuntia and SCB Medical Athletic Society vice-president Manoranjan Mallick were present at the opening ceremony.

Mukteswar CC 124/10 in 18.3 overs (Angel Romi Mishra 52, Narendra Das 26, Pallabindu Mishra 24: Partha Acharya 5/8, Goutam Sahoo 4/20) lost to Biswabharati CC 128/3 in 14.5 overs (Mrunmay Das 48, Subit Biswal 30 n.o, Satyen Chiranjiv Mohanty 24 n.o: Angel Romi Mishra 2/12) by 7 wkts.
